Do we still think writer's block is laziness in the 21st century?

October 15, 2014

Last weekend there was an aritcle on writer's block in the weekend edition of The Age by Jane Sullivan. She was breaking down writer's block looking at what other writer's thought. Some like Ayelet Waldman and Philip Pullman thought it was sheer 'laziness' or 'a condition that affected amateurs'. Seriously!

We've just had mental health week so let's be clear.

Telling a writer with writer's block that they're just lazy or an amateur is like telling a depressed person there's nothing wrong with them, they've just got a bad attitude and need to go for a run and be grateful for what they've got in life.

Going for a run and being grateful is actually a great thing to do when you're depressed but it's not going to cure a serious mental illness such as depression.

And telling a writer they don't actually have a problem isn't going to make it go away. I think we know that by now? Don't we? I mean, it is the 21st century right? We can actually discuss tricky mental issues.....
